Jamie Figueroais a creative writing student at The Institute of American Indian Arts. She identifes as Boricua from the island of Borinquen—more commonly known by its colonized name—Puerto Rico. To be Boricua is to be tri-ethnic: Taino, Afro-Caribbean, and Spanish. Jamie has been an active participant in Santa Fe's multi-arts ensemble Littleglobe since 2008 and has performed her poetry in collaboration with local artists at events including: SALVE: Women in War, Women Warriors at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and for the exhibit FORM and FUNCTION at 516 Arts. Her work includes fiction, creative non-fction, and poetry and is an exploration of familial relationships, culture, and ancestry. Second place winner of TCJ's (Tribal College Journal) fiction contest, her piece 'Good Hair' appears in that publication's Fall 2010 issue. Jamie is the 2010 recipient of the Truman Capote Scholarship.
