One and Many was an exploration in performance,
sound, and imagery made by a collective of 13 women who came
together through their shared experience of living with cancer.
This exploration arose as an extension of this group's earlier
performance and installation work with CROSSINGS (2001), a performance
project based in expression through movement, sculpture, sound,
and text. One and Many began as a way to transform the images
that were already being created through the viewpoint of the
camera. The participants commitment to this shared artistic
practice, and willingness to challenge themselves within new
forms of expression was an inspiring approach to how an individual
chooses to live during a time of crisis.
One and Many was a meditation on the dynamic
interplay between individual and group. The piece explored expressions
of part and whole. The role of the individual fluctuated between
the internal, inner world, and the external, public space. This
manifestation of their visual vocabulary, combined with a unifying
soundtrack created from improvisational structures, explores
the role of memory in the artistic imagination while fusing
humor, irony and an inner experience.
