Newcomers

2023

In collaboration with Capital High School and Communities in Schools (CIS), Newcomers is a storytelling, filmmaking and media making workshop for  "newcomers" - students who have recently immigrated to the United States, mainly from Mexico and Central America.

CIS is a wraparound services organization whose mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Most of the newcomer students shared stories about their journeys coming to the United States from Mexico and Central America and the challenges that came with leaving their home and acclimating to a new country, city, and school. By sharing their stories through film, the newcomers strengthened their bond with each other in addition to having their experiences seen and heard by other members of the school and community.
